Contribute Data

PetDB is part of the Geoinformatics for Geochemistry Program (GfG) that supports open access to scientific data.

GfG encourages investigators to contribute their data to the GfG data collections so that the data can be discovered and reused by a diverse community now and in the future.

 

Guidelines for Data Contribution

Data can be contributed in any format, but should be documented with relevant information regarding the analytical data quality and sample provenance following the Editors' Roundtable's Recommendations for the Publication of Geochemical Data:

  • The analytical quality of the data should be documented by providing, at a minimum, analytical technique, lab, and reference material measurements (where appropriate). If data was normalized to a standard, the normalization should be documented.
  • All analyzed samples should be listed with latitude and longitude and lithology. GfG recommends using the British Geological Survey Rock Classification Scheme. Samples from cores should have a depth-in-core.
  • All samples should be registered in the System for Earth Sample Registration (SESAR) and have an International Geo Sample Number (IGSN) as a globally unique identifier. The IGSN should be listed in data tables along with the sample name.

Data templates are provided below to help assemble all information.

 

Three Easy Steps to Submit Data

  1. Register any samples in your dataset that do not yet have an IGSN (International Geo Sample Number) with the System for Earth Sample Registration (SESAR).
  2. Enter your data, sample information, and analytical metadata in the appropriate data template(s) (see below). Follow the Editors' Roundtable's Recommendations for the Publication of Geochemical Data by providing, at a minimum, analytical technique, lab, and reference material measurements (if appropriate) and listing samples with a latitude and longitude and lithology.
  3. Upload the data template to the Geochemical Resource Library (GRL).

 

Your dataset will be registered and archived in the Geochemical Resource Library. GfG data managers will ingest the data into the appropriate data collection (PetDB, SedDB, VentDB, Deep Lithosphere Dataset).

Data templates are available for various data types such as bulk elemental analysis (majors, traces), bulk isotope analysis, mineral analysis (in-situ analysis), melt inclusion analysis. This version of the templates was posted on 27 September 2011.
