GSA Lunchtime Workshop: Data Resources for the Geosciences
The GfG Program and the Marine Geoscience Data System hosted an informal data resource workshop at the 2007 GSA Meeting. Twenty-four participants were introduced to EarthChem, PetDB, and SedDB and visualization tools available through EarthChem and GeoMapApp.
PetDB hosts Summer Interns from Rutgers University and Columbia College
PetDB hosted undergraduate interns Stephanie Bloomer (Rutgers U., Naya Sou (Rutgers U.), and Peregrine Gerard-Little (Columbia College) during the summer of 2007. Interns gained familiarity with geochemical databases and assisted in the development of the EarthChem and PetDB systems to complement research projects on topics related to rocks from the ocean floor and the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province . A summary of the work accomplished was presented at the 2007 AGU Fall Meeting:
Block, K A, Lehnert, K A, Johansson, A K, Herzberg, C T, Stern, R J, Bloomer, S, Gerard-Little, P, Paul, M, Raye, U, Sou, N, 2007, Fostering Education and Research Goals Through Partnerships Between Academic Programs and Geoinformatics Projects

MARGINS Data in the Classroom
PetDB and EarthChem were present at the recent MARGINS Education Workshop held in Arlington, VA where participants collaborated to plan and create mini-lessons based on MARGINS science and online database resources. To view details of the workshop and mini-lessons currently being developed visit the MARGINS Education webpage on the SERC website

Geoscience Education in the New Cyberinfrastructure
As part of the DLESE project, the Science & Education Research Center (SERC) at Carleton College has developed educational modules that use the EarthChem databases PetDB, GEOROC, and NAVDAT for exercises and activities in teaching petrology.

EarthChem Short Course: "Using Online Igneous Geochemical Databases for Research and Teaching"
EarthChem provided hands-on training in the use of the SERC educational modules as a resource in classrooms during a GSA sponsored short course at the GSA Annual Meeting 2006 in Philadelphia. Ten faculty and students attended the course and learned about Cyberinfrastructure & Geoinformatics, relational databases & visualization tools, and trained in the use of PetDB, GEOROC, and NAVDAT.
